I guess you could say I have had a lifetime at the Oaks.
I can remember as a kid, going to the restroom was fun because you got to go up that ramp and could see all over the restaurant. I remember the garlic butter boats, and the peppermint patties at the register.
I remember as a teenager, using the bathrooms over at the corner to change into bathing suits. The doors had "pointers" and "setters" on them.
I can remember carrying my kids and watching them as they went up that ramp, knowing what they were thinking. I always got them a peppermint patty when we left.
I remember the day my dad wanted to go to the beach house one last time. I took him, he spent 30 minutes on the swing, and said "lets go eat at the Oaks". We did. He died shortly after. That was just before they closed down.
Yep, a lifetime.

The more I know about something, the more I know that I did not know as much as I thought I knew that I knew.

Dang that has been a long time ago. Those boats with the butter in em' used to be a hit. After eating there I'd talk my mom into letting me buy some fireworks next door.
No matter what, it's a good day.

I remember $4 would buy you a chinette platter full of seafood at Julia Mae's, with grouper throats! The place would be full of locals and you'd be the only one eating seafood.
Re: ANYONE HAVE OLD PICS OF OAKS OR JULIA MAES?
Then there was the Oaks motel with the famous mini-shower. A man of any size could not take a shower without hitting the walls.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

A considerable portion of my size can be attributed to The Oaks and Julia Mae's....but I loved every bite!
Anybody remember Julia Mae's "downtown"? I was afraid to use bathroom because it looked like back of building about ready to fall into the river.
My favorite remembrance was a message written on a sheet of notebook paper behind the register....said simply "NO CUSSING".
We used to take the boat from Alligator Point down to Julia Mae's. Marine Patrol stopped me more than once coming into the mouth of the river.
Anybody that was anybody ate Sunday lunch at The Oaks!
My kids wore ruts in that ramp!
I must admit I enjoyed the decorum of their lounge....drinks were not bad either!
I have a pic of Julia Mae's sign on 98 if you'd like it.....I'll have to find the file.
One of the Oak's family guys ran the kitchen at Merry Acres Restaurant in Albany for awhile and the seafood was great!

Had an ancient Winnie we used to drive down and park at old campground where Moorings is....kids loved the
green scum "swimming" pool. We'd walk to Julia Mae's and stand in line along 98 to get in. My kids still talk about a guy we used to
see down there who rode a small motorbike and always had a large dog perched on the back. We never could understand why the dog
didn't fall off. Fresh honey buns from IGA for breakfast and other meals at Julia Mae's = as good as it gets!
