Without a net, St. Marks 4/10/10

Post by FishWithChris »

After a heavy Friday night filled with     TheBeerGuy (Zach) and I decided to take the SeaFoxxx out for a solid half day of fishing... I mean, catching!!! We load up, stop by the shop for ice and beverages, and head on down to the lighthouse! Making our way down there was quick, but once through the gate it was like taking a driver's test: Horribly slow (5-10mph) drivers and dumb-dumbs parked on the road in full lane around blind corners... :smt011

We finally launch in the water at 2p and crank some tunes and start heading out to a very high tide and water moving. We head in one of the Cardinal Directions a certain number of miles from the ramp and realize there's about 5 boats where we usually start our first drift. We set up a few hundred yards away and begin' that fishin' stuff.

I was yet to catch a fish for 2010 (only been out a few times) so I needed to get the skunk off. Zach pulls first couple over the boat with his super secret stretchy bait and I'm like, WTH! So I switch from jigging to a lil' suspending twitch lure and it was on from there! He boxes the first two trout 16-17" and I pull up a few right at 15" but decided to toss them back.

Set up time for the second drift and here we go! We go back and forth catching, releasing, breaking off, boxing, twisting lines, downing beverages when we start to spot the Spaniards jumping! We get all excited, toss on a mack lure and a spoon and get some solid hits but never any hookups! It was overcast so site fishing outside of the "boils and jumps" were impossible. After an hour or so chasing them in 5-7' we said screw it and head back to the 3-4' range for more catchin'. We got lazy and put very little effort in the next hour of fishing, i was twitching laying on the bow of the boat and he was jigging laid back on the chairs in the rear, beverages in hand of course!  I get hit and then it starts back up:

I put my lil' suspending twitch lure and within almost an hour limit myself with largest a couple hairs past 18". About this time we hear a few hundred yards from us what sounded like our friend George on his boat (can never miss his voice, typical blue shirts, and ridiculous fro of hair!). He was hootin' and a hollerin' "WOOOOOOOOOOO NOW THATS A FISH ! OMFG WOOOOOOOOO HOLY (^%$% THAT'S A FISH!!!!!" Come to find it, it's a 24" beast right at 6lbs where we started our first drift :smt012 Not too long after that I hook up with a random spanish on my trout lure and swooped him and it started getting dark.

Right at 8p we plane out and fly towards the ramp, cursing those stupid invisible teeth! We were the last truck/trailor in the lot and was certainly entertaining to see!

Final count, 8 Trout and 1 Spanish. We would've limited out MUCH EARLIER if someone *cough cough* didn't let the net fly out of the boat and not realize it last trip out   Total count was somewhere between 30-40 fishes hooked up today, 25 or so brought to the deck and the rest either spit it out or did some aerial acrobatics. Though overcast all day, gorgeous day on the water!

And I must say, Capt Thrasher (TheBeerGuy) did a heck of a job putting us on the fish that day, especially on during our spanish tracking adventures!
