Need New Radio
Well, It looks like I may have to purchase a new radio to replace my old fixed mount unit. I noticed during the Keaton Tournament that it would receive just fine but wouldn't transmit or sometimes would transmit intermitently. I heard from Liberty Communications this morning (after a week) that they don't even want to open it up because of concern for the water tight integerity. I'm probably going to pick up the Standard Eclispe from West Marine ($99) unless someone has knowledge of a "blind stagger'n can't help it" deal somewhere else. Time is an issue for me as well so I don't want to wait on something being shipped next week etc.

SR I bet I can fix that radio with just a new microphone should not have to even go in it.

That's what I was thinking. I told them I thought it might be the Mic. I'm wondering if they really are comfortable working on something that is associated with the Marine enviornment. I would think a different Mic could be tested without opening the case but I'm not a radio repairman.

Yes you could get the mic element changed and it would more than likely fix your promblem without even going into the radio.

Re: Need New Radio
After a week, I would think Liberty Communications would have been able to figure that one out.

Re: Need New Radio
(not my first post, had some email account issues and made another login) I must share this story w/you. Last July, 5 miles S of DI. Could hear the moorings fine, they could not hear me. I called them, from that spot on my cell phone to confirm. Later same day, I could hear them..... intermittently could not call out, but could always hear them. Same thing next close in trip. So, I think new radio needed. Remember my radio is about 5 yrs old, antenna is about 7 yrs old. Flip a coin, buy a new antenna...$100(same price as a new radio). I fixed the problem completely, Did a radio ck to Keaton beach fron DI. Working great still. FYI...good luck.

Re: Need New Radio
Thanks for the post RF.
I think my issue is either the mic or internally in the unit. When I key the mic it does not break the transmission that is currently being received nor does the little red light come on indicating transmission.

Well there you have it...You need a new mic key, or a new mic all together. You should be able to find one locally and relatively inexpensively. Keep in mind that if you are catchin fish you won't have time to be yackin on the radio.Sir reel wrote:Thanks for the post RF.

Re: Need New Radio
Same thing happens when on international channels. You can hear but not transmit.

Re: Need New Radio
Checked it last night with my neighbors hand held. I could hear him fine but no joy when I transmitted to him. I did double check to make sure it was set on US rather than International. When I key the mic, it will interrup any transmission taking place (on my side) but does not transmit voice.
By the way, I heard that at one of the recent Club meetings that I wasn't able to attend that Sea Tow or some speaker reported that there was now a channel where you could use for radio checks exclusively. Does anyone happen to remember the channel and is it monitered 24/7?

I'm not sure if it's fully operational yet or not or whether it's monitored but if memory serves me it repaets back what you said. That way you get both ends of it.Sir reel wrote: By the way, I heard that at one of the recent Club meetings that I wasn't able to attend that Sea Tow or some speaker reported that there was now a channel where you could use for radio checks exclusively. Re: Need New Radio
Check the ground on the radio and the antenna. Sounds to me like Liberty didn't even try to determine the problem!!
