Snook in North FL?
Anyone have any idea to where the most productive Snook fishing is in the north FL area? I have fished alot in the glades but the farthest up I have ever caught snook is Tampa. Never fished anywhere between Suwanne and Tampa. I have heard Crystal river being ok but what about cedar key? I know it wont be anything like the glades but it is really hard to make that long of a trip from Valdosta more than a few times per year.
Thanks

I would imagine that this past winter either pushed or killed off the population that had come that far north. But I've been wrong today already.

Homasassa/Crystal River is about their northern limit.
Apparently they do rarely get caught in this area.
I lost a fish couple years ago in the river that sho-nuff had a line down the side.
But then I have seen lots of things that sho-nuff weren't there.

My brother gave me a fishing report this morning. He went to Crystal River Saturday. He got a whopper of a snook up to the boat. First one he nearly caught that far north. He doesn't like CR but will go anywhere as long as he's fishing. His friend went to CR and he went as well. He always says "never again" but.....he knows better.
Suwannee and Horseshoe is his fishing grounds.

here is a report from another site regarding snook in wacassassa bay
http://bigbendsportsman.zeroforum.com/z ... d?id=13650
they had more discussion around the same time due to the cold temps and fishkills.

Re: Snook in North FL?
We fished cedar key a lot in college and a couple of times a year since. We've never caught, seen or heard of anyone catching snook. I'm sure it happens occasionally, but certainly not with enough regularity to target. Good luck in crystal river, there were a lot of nice ones caught last year (before it got chilly).

I know until this past winters kill off people were catching them with some regularity here in the Jacksonville area. Specifically Ponte Vedra down to St. Augustine. There were a ton of small snook dead in the salt creeks around Ponte Vedra in January when it got so cold.

Re: Snook in North FL?
Jacksonville was the secret only known by the snook. I spoke to a number of guides over there that said they knew that they had snook but did not know the extent until the the cold that killed so many. Like everyone said crystal river sometimes but now it might take a little for them to move back into these areas. A couple warmer winters will help.

Re: Snook in North FL?
I was watching a fishing show about a year ago. Don’t remember who it was but they were tearing up the snook in Jacksonville. It surprised me because I didn’t think they came that far north. I have very little knowledge of Jacksonville but they were fishing in what looked to be down town. The other crazy thing about the show was it wasn’t even summer. I want to say they were catching them in winter or fall. The guide was tell the host of the show it was one of the best kept secrets around. I believe him because I have never heard anything about snook in Jacksonville before watching the show or after.
