Keaton Beach 5/7/10

Post by DixieReb »

Haven't seen a fishing report in a while, so thought I would post one. Wife and I tried our luck this morning going out on a rising tide. Tried topwater for a while in close and had one good swipe at a badonkadonk plug, then nothing. Went further out over toward Dekle and found a few trout, mostly shorts. Got a real nice 21'' trout on live pinfish, then another 16'' one and a 14''. Water temp 82 degrees and water a little stained, looked good. Bite stopped at 12 noon, high tide. Water started moving again about 1 pm, started catching all kinds of stuff. Several big remoras, lots of short sea bass but managed to get 2 nice keeper bass to 11''.I lost a big flounder at the boat. Wife lost something really big on her cork rig, it ran toward the boat, then turned and headed to Mexico or somewhere. Before I could get the boat started, he cut her 30 lb. mono leader. :smt010 I guess either a big shark or maybe a cobia. She was using live bait. Bit fizzled after that so we moved around a lot. I noticed the grass isn't growing in a lot of places where we found it last year, not sure what's going on there. But we didn't catch much in those places. Found some healthy grass out from Keaton channel and got another keeper trout, several almost big enough. And houndfish, they were all in the grass. They chased our lures and we caught a big one. Neva had never seen one before, thought he was ugly. I told her it was just a big needlefish. :o We quit about 3:30 hot and tired but we had a good time. Ended up with 3 trout to 21'', 2 keeper bass to 11'', and a big hand-sized grunt (Mama likes to eat them) A good mess of fish, trout still had roe in them but not as big as 3 weeks ago. Yall go get em! :smt004

Good report Reb. The grass seems like it gets less and less each year north of Keaton. Especially over near Adams Beach. Get on a little further north around Yates Creek, it starts to come back some. Those Hounds can sure make some fine jumps when hooked. Didn't see any last year.

Thanks for the report  Headed down tomorrow for a few days and hope for some good weather and some good fishing. What depths seamed to be working for you?

ddb, the first part of the day with tide rising we seemed to do better in 6-7 ft. water. I think it was deep enough and stained enough they could hide. The bottom was spotty. If we got into a bare area, it was nothing. Before we left I stopped in an area with grass cover that was 3-4 ft. deep and we caught several fish. It was right before low tide.
