What VHF channel?
Re: What VHF channel?
I am always on 16, that is the hailing channel and once ya get a person, you can agree on a channel to converse on

Re: What VHF channel?
I have heard that channel 16 is the emergency only channel. I will be scanning 16(as required by the coasties) as well as 9 and some others. You can always call me on 9 and we can agree what channel to go to from there. I will be glad to share any information that will help my fellow anglers. I am sorry, but I am not allowed to tell you where JT51's holes are. he would get very upset if I were to do that. Any other info is fair game though.

You are all fishing my holes.
Many produce good fish on some days.
The others produce good fish on different days.
Channel 16 is the preferred hailing channel.
Then you can take your conversation to "MY" channel, which is 18.

You are required to monitor 16 at all times and when you are hailed you switch to an appropriate agreed upon channel like 72 to continue your conversation. the idea is that if everyone monitor 16 and switches to other channels for conversing, then there should always be someone listening to 16 in the event of an emergency hail.fishinfool wrote:I have heard that channel 16 is the emergency only channel.
Channel 16 VHF is a radio frequency on the marine radio band and the international distress frequency for shipping and maritime purposes. Channel 16 is also used to call up ships and shore stations. After an initial response, however, the call is to be switched to one of the working channels. Channel 16 is used for broadcasting distress calls such as MayDay, Pan-pan, Securite or other urgent safety messages. It is allied to the 2182 kHz frequency.[1]
[edit] Authorized usage
VHF Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is monitored 24 hours a day by coastguards around the world. In addition, all sea bound vessels are required to monitor Channel 16 VHF when sailing, except when communicating on other marine channels for legitimate business or operational reasons. Coastguards and others are permitted to broadcast short informative safety messages on channel 16, however, it is an offense in most countries to make false "Mayday" calls. When using the channel to call up ships or shore stations, the call has to be switched to a working channel after the initial response in order to keep Channel 16 available to others.[2]

PS I wish some of the Coast Guard volunteers knew that 16 was for Hailing and distress, because some of them think its just for distress.
