ROCKYS Slot Trout Tournament

Post by Jumptrout51 »

The ROCKYS Slot Trout Tournament today had 26 anglers.
Not a bad turnout with Presnells,TeamSeatrout and Rock the Dock all going on at the same time.
The ROCKYS Tournament was for 5 trout all had to be in the 15-20 inch slot range.
No over 20 inch trout allowed in the bag limit.
There was a side pot for Big Trout that could be over 20,but had to be weighed separately.
Also a Big Redfish pot.
Everyone signed in at ROCKYS and left for the ramps of their choice.
My partner Ashley "Warrior" Mock and I launched from Fenholloway.
The water at 7 a.m. was 76 degrees with a slight breeze from the East.
Our first stop produced a perfect 27 inch Red on topwater.
We are feeling good.
A few blowups from trout with no hookups was discouraging.
We move around and keep chunking.
BAM!! Drag ripping and line singing. Ten minutes later we boat a 20 pound Jack Crevalle.
Time to leave this spot.
We move and fish various structure for a couple more hours with still no trout in the boat.
Make a decision to go deep.
Get to our 10 foot hole and BAM!!!
Break the ice with a fat 17 inch trout in the boat.
It is very late morning by now.
The weigh in is at 4 p.m. and we need 4 more trout and hopefully one over 20.
No more trout to be had in the deep water,so we decide to move back in and try 9 feet,8feet,7 feet etcetera until we find some fish.
At the 6 foot mark we pick up a couple more.
One is over 20.
That skunk is now off the boat.
We keep moving and wind up back where we started.
Pick up some more good reds and a couple more trout.
That bite falls off as fast as it started.
Moved back out to deep water and finish up our stringer with a 19 and a 20.
Time now to leave for the weigh in.
The wind is now out of the South and the water temp is 86.
Back at ROCKYS all the anglers were lined up with their catch.
When the smoke cleared Heath Lavalle and Bradin Mattingly tied for Big Red at 6.79 pounds beating Warriors red by .08 hundredths of an ounce.
Ashley "Warrior" Mock had Big Trout at 3.59 pounds.
3rd place slot limit went to Michael "tries so hard" Aman and Chad "Frosty" Frost with 8.05 pounds.
2nd place slot limit went to Team Davis/Carter with 8.67 pounds.
1st place slot limit went to Ashley "Warrior" Mock and Steve "Jumptrout51" Taylor with 9.88 pounds.
The Warrior/JT51 combo only caught fish on JT51 holes.
But then, all fish caught today were on JT51 holes.

Slot Trout tourny is a great idea, helps to keep the breeding stock off the scales
Keep our fish stock strong... Release more fish...

You are correct.
Even though there was a over 20 big trout prize only 2 trout over 20 were brought to the scales.

Congrats Jumptrout and Warrior. Nice stringer.

I'd like to see more tourneys adopt this format and let the big females live to breed.

Thank you Captain Dave.
This would be a good format for NFGFC in 2011.
If you don't get a over 20 trout in your stringer the weight penalty is lessened and the stress to catch a over 20 trout is gone.
Me thinks ROCKYS has hit on a good idea.

Congratulations to JT and Warrior. The no over 20 is a good idea. Captain Randle Leger was promoting this type of tournament bag several years ago.

You make a strong argument for having a TOURNAMENT section on the forum where tournaments could be announced and results posted.
