A good weekend of fishing

Post by fishinfool »

Saturday, 5-29-2010 started at 06:30 with my buddy and me heading east from the Lighthouse. We went to a flat that has produced Trout in the past. I managed two keepers and none for my buddy. The tide came in enough to get to the Redfish spot. No Reds for me or my buddy. Another trip to a different past productive flat. One Trout for me. None for my buddy. Now, he did not get skunked. At least he was able to get a bend in his pole and a stretch in his line. There were a couple of cats caught. There were numerous ladyfish and blues. There were even a couple of blue runners.
Sorry no pics. The trout were 17" 15 1/2" and 15", keepers all but nothing to get too excited over.
Sunday had me doing maintenance on the boat and catching up on some rest.
On Monday Mom wanted to go fishing. As I had no other plans we got out at first light. We went straight to the Red spot. Mom hooked up with this 16" tough guy. He thought he was much bigger than he was and put up a good fight. Image
A little later Mom hooks up again. This time with a 16" Flattie that also put up a good fight.

During this time I had two respectable blowups on a bone colored super spook. There was no joy in Mudville as the mighty Fishin Fool had struck out.
Then mom hooks up again with this beauty.

Stretch as I might, he would only reach 17 3/4", so back he went.
Right after this I hooked another Red. A good one! I saw him as I set the hook. He would have kept and I could guess him at 20-25". He came unbuttoned. It was all I could do not to let loose with all the words Mom told me not to say when I was kid. That was the second fish that came loose from that same spoon. I decided to take a look at it a little closer. That is when I realized the hook was opened up a little. After some thought I recall that I have caught at least 10 Reds over 24" on that same spoon. The hook is getting weak and I need to replace it. I don't think Capt. Mike at Aqua Dream had designed them to take that kind of punishment.
Out to the flat we go in search of Trout. Nothing, nada, zip, zilch. There were no strikes of any kind with the exception of pinfish. After the tide turned we head for more Red territory. After searching new spots for a couple of hours with no luck and an outboard that has decided to act up, I start working my way, via trolling motor, to more familiar territory.
Just as I nose into and old nook my spoon is met by this 27" hoss.

I was beginning to think I was not to catch a fish all day. I am glad I stuck it out.
I got things cleaned up and it was off to Parkway Marine this morning to have my finicky motor looked at. I certainly hope it is not a blown head gasket as I suspect. I really want it to be something simple. Well, whatever will be will be.
Tight lines,
FF
