Aucilla trip

Post by onefishtwofish »

Took a buddy of mine I grew up with fishing. He just moved to Gville area and so it was a 2 hour trip over. We decided to go to Aucilla since NWS was calling for rough in the morning (umm, they were wrong).

My bro and nephew met us there and were in their boat and we fished the same areas all day. Decided to make it for bragging rights. We set the rules for the tourney and off we went.

Only caught a couple in the river mouth, so we ventured out to the flats/sand bars. Not much happening there, so we headed to new territory for us. It was then ON! We caught a lot of rats, one keeper red in my boat. Lost a few nice fish. My buddy had a reel malfunction and had to use my preferred oyster bar reel and rod combo, so I was using lighter line than I prefer. Caught a 23" trout, fat and chunky (and foul hooked - a dead fish, so we kept it :smt010 ). Put another 19" in the boat short while later. One nice flounder too. We met up with the other boat and were tallying the score with them in the lead. As we are talking, I land a red to put us back in the lead. We split up again and time is getting short. We are drifting into them and watch them boat a very nice red. :smt011 It was the second they had hooked up so we squeezed in and fished there until time to go.

Team Redman lost, but it was a battle to the end.

Team Codshack won and they would have been in the money on a 2 man tourney with their reds. Both were 26 3/4 and nice. One was nice, the other was a perfect tourney fish, thick and chunky. Only two upper slot that were caught all day and one was caught within 5 minutes of ending time. No boats, motors or cash was won, but I will hear about it much longer this way. I would have rather made it for money!

We had a lot of fun catching up and it took me back 30 years to when we fished every day, all summer long.
Ducks, turkeys, flats fishing. Who has time for golf?
