6/18/10 Keaton Tarpon

Post by ddb »

Breambuster had to do some work on his boat prior to the big scallop opener so we snuck down early to do the work then get in a little fishing. Trout fishing was slow, we did manage to sneak out 5 before a vicous storm moved in in the afternoon. The highlight of the trip was a short but exciting Tarpon hook-up. Sorry, no pics, the whole thing lasted about 5-10 seconds. Breambuster was bringing in his bait when a very large Tarpon (sorry I have no reference to guess the weight but it had to be 5' long) engulfed his bait around 10' from the boat. It inhaled it, made a quick jump boatside, moved out around 10' and made a full-air jump, then proceeded to spool him rapidly. I was hooked up with a trout but tried to make my way to start up the motor to give chase, but my reflexes and sinapsis are definately no match for these beasts. This has happened to us once before at Keaton, but this one was up close and personal.

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

It is exciting when your not expecting it. I hang them there all the time, never landed one. Fought one an hour and a half last year out of a thirteen-foot boat. He drug me from out on the flats to about two hundred yards up yates creek, then turned around and headed back right under the boat and back out to the flats. Finally broke him off on purpose when I got tired of fighting him.

If you happened to catch a tarpon with a red cork and 100yds of sufix line trailing behind it, I want my cork back.... it was a brand new cork :)
