St. Marks trout Fishing----what water depths are they at?

Post by KevinE »

The water has been really hot lately. Last time I went out we only hooked into a couple of trout, a couple lady fish, several sharks, pigfish and a sea bass.

We were fishing in 3-6 feet of water East of the light house. Any suggestions on how deep we should go out?

I have not seen the water temps lately, but if they are 85+ you might have to go to fish 5-7. That is the way it was last year.

We were out yesterday and they were at quite a few different depths.

There was a nasty storm straight and to the West so we bounced out East.

Most were caught in the 5'-7', closer to the 7' range, and mostly on the front ends of moving tides. We actually stayed outside the stakeline most of the time (because of the storm) and hooked up to 50 or so trout in a matter of two hours tops. A lot of shorts, but quite a few keepers tossed in there.

Don't expect to throw a topwater plug unless you either A) find an area without grass or B) don't mind getting 10 feet of action before you have to reel to remove grass. Most were caught on soft-plastics jigging off the bottom and slow jerk retrieves.

The later in the day, the hotter it will get, and the deeper they'll move.

Fantastic. Thanks guys. I usually go with gulps on a bullet weight....they are quite effective.
