A Bad Day Turned Good - Econfina Report (Long Story)

Post by Steve Stinson »

My son, Andrew, decided at the last minute that he wanted to go to a friends and swim instead of fish on Saturday. Despite a couple phone calls, I could not find anybody to fish the Econfina with me early Saturday morning. Even Lady the fish dog, sauntered out to the Jeep, yawned and returned to her bed at 4:30 am when I loaded the truck and headed out. It's hard to find a dedicated crew in this Summer heat.

Undaunted by their lack of enthusiasm, I drove on down to JR's in the dark and parked in front of his door step. At about 6:00 am he opened the store - a ham sandwich, some coffee and Gulp baits and I was off to the ramp. I ran into Rick Bruchard and Jim Chalkley Sr. at the ramp, then headed down river. Actually - only about a mile or so down river. My trusty old Merc Jet foot sputtered a couple of times then shut off and would not crank again. I push-poled over to the sawgrass, where Rick and Jim stopped to check on me. I was pretty sure I could get it to crank again and told them to go ahead and go fishing.
I was able to determine that I had water in my fuel by disconnecting the fuel line from the motor and putting some gas in a empty water bottle. Figuring that my water separator was full, I cut the fuel line on the tank side and was going to bypass the water separator. A quick check of the fuel coming into the separator revealed that the water was also in the gas tank. Deciding not to risk further damage to the outboard, I began to push-pole my way back up river along the West bank (using my trusty Skinny Water Products push pole :D ). Four or five boats passed by me not slowing to help or looking my way, so I decided to pull the cowling off the motor, to indicate I had engine problems. A few more boats passed, then a couple guys in a 24' Carolina Skiff turned around to offer help. By now, I had push poled a couple hundred yards back up river against the tide, so I apologized for cutting into their fishing time and gladly accepted their help.

My rescue crew, Donnie and Andrew, were both from up in Georgia. We chatted about the fishing on the slow trip back to the ramp, then they talked amongst themselves a little just before we arrived at the ramp. Sipping my coffee and being towed behind their outboard, I couldn’t hear what they were discussing, but I sort of figured they were revising their fishing plans since I had cut into the couple of cool morning hours they would have to fish. Instead, they offered to wait on me until I put my boat back on the trailer if I wanted to come fish with them….Wow!
We swapped my gear and lunch over to their boat and headed back down river. After we cleared the river mouth, we were greeted by large mats of floating grass. Even a couple miles out on the flats the grass was still with us making it hard to use a topwater or really, any type of plug with treble hooks. We fished water from 4’ to 6’ deep with limited success, then tried both deeper and shallower. With the wind and the tide at nearly a stand-still, it was difficult to get the trout to cooperate. At about 2:00 when we heard the folks on the radio fishing around Keaton Beach discussing heavy thunder and lightning, we decided to head back in. We managed a couple limits of good sized trout and one undersized redfish. All the keeper fish were donated to a church fish fry that Donnie and Andrew were cooking for.

Donnie and Andrew – You guys renewed my faith in my fellow man. I sincerely appreciate you helping out and then taking me fishing with you. You two were a really blessing in what would have been a bad day.

I've towed in quite a few boats myself. And when they offered payment I told them to return the favor to someone and not pass them by.

CSM -
I am not sure where the water came from. I use my boat most every weekend, so the gasoline should not have been very old. It is either the ethanol in the fuel or rain water getting into the top of the tank.
The good thing about jon boats is that everything is easily replaced. My tank is a 12 gallon plastic portable one that just sits in the rear of the boat. On the way home, I went by Parkway Marine to drop the boat off, but they were closed. So I stopped at NAPA auto parts and found a new fuel line, primer bulb, and canister for my water separator. Another stop at Walmart produced a new 6 gallon tank, hose clamps, some fittings, and 6 gallons of fresh fuel. I installed all of this in my driveway, fired the motor and ran some carb. cleaner through it, then loaded up my wife and Andrew about 5:30 pm and headed up Thomasville Rd. to the Iamonia boat ramp off County Road 12.
We ran circles around the lake with the water skiers until we burned nearly all of the six gallons and the motor ran better than it has for the past couple of trips. That makes me think the water has been building up in the tank for a while. The only issue I may still have is that it seems to idle at a little lower rpms than prior to this issue. The hole shot and response from half throttle to wide open is better than before.
There was a brown residue on the top of the old water separator cannister and coating the inside of the old fuel line where I cut it. So I may still have some trash in the carbs or the fuel lines inside the motor cowling.
My boat is a 60 hp powerhead rated at 40 hp due to the jet foot, so six gallons is not going to be enough fuel capacity. I am thinking about picking up a second six gallon tank so I can run them dry or nearly dry each time rather than going back to a single 12 gallon set up.

We were the offshore boat that came by you. Didn't know you were having issues, but honestly once that beast is on plane, we can't come off and get back up very easily on that tide.

Couldn't hurt to run some Seafoam through it just to remove any more moisture and crud from the system. It's about $10.00 for 16 oz. at Autozone. Great stuff.

Sorry about your water problem. We were at econfina yesterday alo. This is after replacing a wheel bearing at JR's. He was a great help and I will be going back there again
Afer fishing from 10 to 3 we headed in and about halfway in had the water problems and motor shut down. Dont know how the water is getting in as I was only using
ethanol free gas and also using a treatment with it. Unfortunately my tank is built in so gonna have to put it in the shop.
