boom at mouth of OR

Post by billch »

Got out yesterday after the rain and a large tender was installing boom at the mouth of OR. There was a line of boom from Bald Point out to the markers. The boom had lights on them. The tender was working out far to the channel markers towards Mashes Sands Park. Looked like they were laying down boom to eventually tie together at the mouth of the river. It sure gives gives me a bad feeling. Caught one 24" trout at the clam bar and numerous cats, sharks. Had one tarpon blow up on us but no hook up. It was really rough.
Congrats on Jeff Suber getting 2nd in the Sport Fishing Mag's photo contest. Nice pic, hope we get to continue to fish after this BP mess, so he can take some more pix.

Has anyone else seen this? Are there any pictures of it that someone could post for us out-of-towners?

I would rather have it out there now than wait until the last minute and doom the whole coast.

This is the link to the boom placement maps. So far, the Franklin County plan seems to be completed (see earlier posts by me and Bman). From the Wakulla County plan, OR and the mouth of the St. Marks are also slated for more booms.

Personally I have my doubts about the overall effectiveness of the booms, especially when seas kick up. But BP is going through the motions if nothing else.

I will probably get out later this week after the storms pass. I will take a few pictures then. The tender that was at the mouth of the river was a really big boat/ship. I too think that the boom is pretty easily breached. It looks like you could buy it at Kmart, but I didn't try to pull it up and examine it The waves yesterday were definitely splashing over the boom.
On a side note I heard that they have installed some down at Alligator Harbor and the triple tail have piled up on it. Just a rumor, I was gonna go down there yesterday, but the southeast winds kept me close to the river.
