Snapper Season

Post by konrad »

Just read Gov. Crist is trying to extend the Snapper season but don't know what the probability of it is. Anyone heard anything?

He has no authority in Federal waters. He could only extend it for state. You won't catch a snapper in state waters east of PC anyway.

I saw this press release from the Gulf Council yesterday.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council reminds recreational anglers that the Gulf of Mexico red snapper recreational season closes 12:01 a.m. local time July 24, 2010. The season will reopen Jun 1, 2011. However, because of the Deepwater Horizon/BP Oil Spill and the resulting fishing area closure, a reduction in effort may have prevented the recreational quota from being filled. The Gulf Council has requested that, should NOAA Fisheries determine the quota has not been filled, that it conduct rulemaking to reopen recreational red snapper fishing later this year to allow the harvest of the remaining quota.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. The Council prepares fishery management plans designed to manage fishery resources in the federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The snapper season will most likely be opened back up later in the year. The Gulf Council and NOAA will compile all their data and then meet to determine when it should be opened and for how long. This all depends on how much of the quota has been filled and with a lot of charter fisherman working for BP there could not have been many caught.

Crist realizes that opening a subsequent state waters season is worthless to charter captains and wrote NOAA asking to allow an extention to Federal waters snapper season. I appreciate him doing so, though I think NOAA releasing the statement that it may open later in the year is more likely to come to fruition. Either eay it is nice to see that they understand that no one is able to catch the quota of snapper this year with closures and weather and that it should be reoppened or extended!
