St George Island Newbie

My family and in-laws are looking at going to down to St. George Island Sept 18-25. We are planning to stay on the Bay side so that we can at least have a pier for the kids to fish off of. I may possibly bring our 14ft jon boat with 25 HP.

Can anyone give me any tips or suggestions for fishing from land (where and what to use)?

Also, if I am able to bring my jon boat any tips and where and rigs to fish with jon boat?

I know you don’t want to broadcast your honey holes or hotspots, so you can send me a message if you like. We plan to make this a yearly trip so I wouldn’t be hitting your spots but maybe once a year.

I'm sorry, but while we will take an Auburn Tiger's money, we can not in good conscious help them with finding JT's holes.

We really do not have anything against people from Alabama. It is a great place to be from. Far away from. Kidding.
That time of year is usually good for most any fish in the area except Pompano. (still too warm for them) Spotted Sea Trout will be in deeper water(6'-8') and Reds will be looking for crabs and such in the shallows, usually morning and evening when it is a little cooler. You might find some Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel crashing bait pods in open water(Gulf side). Topwater plugs, 1/8 to 1/4 oz jigs with soft plastics or Gulp shrimp, spoons and jerk baits will work fine. Live shrimp or Pinfish will draw some attention too.
I am not trying to be vague, but get out and look for any bottom that is different or has some spotty grass and try there. Drifting will probably be your best bet.

There's a lot of good info on here about St. George especially the State Park and fishing from land. Use the search feature on here, it can quickly become your friend! search for SGI, St George, SGI state park, St George State Park, etc. You can also use google earth to help locate some potential areas if you feel like doing a little bit of exploring on your own.

The bridge is a great place. Fish your pier at night or first light. Many of the piers are in skiiinnnnny water! Take a cast net for mullet off pier.

TAKE YOUR JON BOAT, YOU CAN USE IT INSIDE MOST ALL OF THE TIME. YOU CAN ALSO GO ON THE GULF SIDE IF THE WINDS ARE BETWEEN 5-10 AND NO STORMS ON THE HORIZON. THE BAY INSIDE WILL BE LIKE MANY OF THE LARGER LAKES IN ALA. AS FAR AS THE WIND GOES. SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, JUST WAATCH OUT FOR THE OYSTER BARSS.

If you take your jon boat and tie it to your dock, do not leave anything in it if you want to keep it. In fact a 14 foot jon boat I would pull out each day.

The ramps at the state park are great for small boats and there is very good fishing in that area too.

Go by Fisherman's Headquarters and see Larry Stone and he can tell you what is biting and the baits to use. Fisherman's Headquarters is next to Harry "A"'s.
