K Tower 4/23-4/24

Post by GC »

Late start on 4/23. K tower covered with boats. We tried trolling stretches and some bottom fishing around OAR #8. No luck! Caught some grunts and black bass on squid. Water was rough!!!!! Couldn't run but 12-14 knots. Water temp around 67 all day.

4/24 We arrived at K Tower 7:30 Saturday morning, was the third boat there. Seas were nice <2'. Ran WAO on the way out!
Dropped over some live pins and did some jigging with diamonds. Several barracuddas roaming the waters. About twenty minutes passed and the drag started screaming on the penn 245 with the live pin. COBIA!! And, the cuddas were chasing him like crazy. We hurried to get him in the boat and Dumb azz GC grabs the net instead of the gaff  Long story short, net bent in half and we lost the fish. Caught a nice rock bass 4 pounds and several spade fish. Hooked two more big ones that cut 150# leader on the wreck before we could turn them.
Not bad for a first offshore trip without a guide.
It really is nice out there. The new boat ran great. And, at least we got to feel a few big un's on the other end.
The "size matters" anchored next to us. Nice Boat! And, I guess size did matter! They caught several cobia sight casting live pins, and 1 AJ.
Fun trip!  Water temp in the low 70's.

We bought it used, with less than 20 hours on it. She was bare when we get her, just the boat, motor, and trailer.
It's a 2001, 21' center console LOGIC, now made by Triumph. Has a 2002 Yam 150 HP 2-stroke. 4 large fish boxes recessed in the floor, 20 gallon bait well, holds 82 gallons of fuel, self bailing cock pit. Garmin 182 GPS, and Garmin 320c fish finder in the console. Love both of them, can see your live bait on the screen!! Electronics box on the T-top with CB. Four rocket launchers up top, two rod holders in the gunnels. Very dry ride! Even in the rough stuff on Friday, we didn't take any spray. In fact, never felt the first bit of mist all weekend. Running wide open 38-40 knots on Saturday with 4 folks on board including my self, through the 2' rollers was as smooth as a porch swing. Total trip for the weekend was about 150 miles...we didn't put the electronics on board Sunday for the inshore stuff... fuel gauge still showed 1/4 tank.
I'll post a pic tomorrow.
