St marks 8-18

Post by onefishtwofish »

3 reds. One was a nine spotter. 19.5, 19.5 and 20.5 One Spanish. And one unknown that grabbed the mullet and the game was on. Spit the drag and never turned its head. Had 10 lb mono and could not budge it. Thought it was a nice fish at first as it made its first run, then it just kinda stopped on the bottom for a minute and gave away the likely species. Ran about 4 more times, with one more stop. I would bet it was a ray.

Call came over 16 of a boat in Escambia running circles with no one aboard and it was canceled a few minutes later. Anyone know anything?

Had a somewhat similar unknown Sunday, picked up a big finger mullet and took off. Line broke. Seconds later 100 yards away, a big (red) fish jumped in the air with a shark close behind it. Just a coincidence?, I think not. Hope "he" made it.

I have had big reds "park" on the bottom for a few minutes. This just did not feel like that. I am telling myself that so I don't feel like I lost a big bull anyways.

Yeah, if he broke off, hopefully he evaded Mr Shark. We have seen some big ones this year. Never when we had the right rods though. Had one in Aucilla chase my topwater lure, kept trying to grab it as I pulled it away from him. 8 lb P-line and a $9 plug did not seem like much of a match for a 5 footer.
