East of the palm tree 9-18-10

Post by fishinfool »

My buddy Heath and I were going to go fishing, but he had to cancel. Something about eating breakfast with the mayor of Mobile, AL. I decided to give it a go solo.
The day started beautifully.

I decided to go in as close as I dare and let the tide carry me in. I worked topwater primarily and had a number of blowups. I don't know why I have had so many misses and short strikes on topwater this year? It has me a little puzzeled,oh, well.
My first fish of the day was a nice little Redfish that came by way of a top water lure. It measured 19" and was released.

About a half hour later into my plying of the flats I hook up. The fish on the end of the line is fighting like a Trout, but I am only in two feet of water and the temp is over 80 degrees. Trout are not supposed to be around given those conditions. Bringing it boatside revealed an 18" Spotted Seatrout. Release number two.

As the water level came up I was able to make it to a creek mouth. A few casts later produced another Trout that was not where he was supposed to be. This one measured 17" and was quite a bit chubbier. Release number three.

It was around 10am by now and I had just cast my plug to a grass point where I had seen a little movement. Bang! I connect again with what feels like a decent fish. All of a sudden this fish goes into hyper drive. Then turns toward the boat and pours on the coals. It is all I can do to keep up with him. Right at boatside the Red I have on the line as well as a very large and hungry shark, turn away. I guess the shark was spooked by the boat and I was able to land my 22" Red. No release this time as I decided it was going to be fresh fish for dinner. Shark's loss is my gain.

If my buddy gets back into town tonight, we just might give it another go tomorrow.
