Dry Ice

Post by Juan »

I haven't seen dry ice in years, but the new Publix carries dry ice and I was wondering if anyone has used it in their coolers... I don't think I'd want to put any fish on it, but how does it work for the beer / sammich cooler?

Juan:

I've used dry ice for years to freeze brand cattle. All I can say is that it is cold! We put carbonated drinks in it once and they froze solid. That didn't work. We also use the thick stirofoam coolers. I think they can take the cold much better than plastic coolers. Several places sale dry ice. The ones who sell gas for welding/cutting etc.

Let us know how it work.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO PUT ANY KIND OF MEAT DIRECTLY ON DRY ICE, ESPECIALLY FRESH CAUGHT FISH. DRY ICE HAS LASTED ME FOR A WEEK WHEN I USE TO GO OFF SHORE A LOT, PUT INSULATION BETWEEN ANY FISH, MEAT AND THE DRY ICE. WE ALWAYS USED 80 QT. STIROFOAM COOLER WITH STIROFOAM AROUND THE DRY ICE IN THE COOLER.

PA speaks the truth... any meat/fish you put directly on dry ice will be ruined. Any thing else will freeze solid in a very short time. You will need to handle it with gloves (rubber preferably) it's not just ice.

Thanks.... I think I'll try some one day next week. All I remember about it is that it smokes and bubbles when put in water.

I bet they sold out on Halloween.

Yeah, my Publix started selling it,too. They have instructions right on the package that advises a good buffer between the dry ice and the groceries.

I've heard the saying "frozen stiff", but that's going a little too far.
