GPS issues

Hey All,

I have a humminbird 587ci all in one unit that the gps seems to be way off. I kept noticing that when I went to some of my numbers the structure wasn't there. Rode around and could never find it. I checked against the O tower Sunday, and it was a 1/4 mile off! Has any one seen this and does anyone know how to fix it? Really don't want to have to get another one since this one is less that a year old.

If I had to guess I would say maybe you changed the map Datum setting. You need to make sure it is set to WGS 84. Also, how did you mark the original coordinates? If it was with a different gps, was it in a different format?

If your track is not in line with the little boat icon clear your track history. Unique to Humminbird, i found out.

I compared to some of the public numbers found on this site. I will have to check the Datum settings. Is there a way to calibrate a GPS? I haven't tried to clear my track history. Ill try that also. Thanks

Tom is right on the map datum. Also, your format for most marine applications is DD.MM.MMM (Degrees, Minutes, and decimal of a Minute). Be sure you have both of these settings correct.

If you are loading data from another unit or something somebody has given you, you need to be sure the data and the data settings in the gps match.

Also if the unit travels 500 miles or more from the original site it must be recalibrated.
Airplanes have to do this every trip.
