Painting a trolling motor?

I have a 4-year old Minn Kota Riptide which, due to operator error, has a bunch of gouges on its foot. (oyster bars)

The gouges have rusted now and I want to re-paint the foot white. The trolling motor is used in salt water. I am 90% sure the rusty part of the trolling motor foot is aluminum. I am thinking this is going to be a sand/primer/paint job.

Has anyone ever done this before? I am looking for tips and specifically for suggestions on sandpaper grit as well as primer and paint brands.

I have done a few 1st thing is you will need a wheel sander to get the corrosion off I found that the appliance paint stays better .Start with course paper then back off with 60 or 80 grit before you primer.

I use the wire wheel, take off any flacking, clean with mineral spirite, put Rust Reformer on it and then paint with Rust-oleum paint "my fresh water TM lasted 7 years in the salt enviro doing this"

I have done this many times to keep my Rip Tide in order. First remove corrosion and loose paint with wire brush. Don't remove the dark color finish under the paint down to the shine. Paint with Johnson Outboard white paint. I always use the 1987 white. The white matches the white on the trolling motor pretty well. It also holds up to salt water better.

Wire wheel; mineral spirits; 240 hand sanding; mineral spirits; 120 hand sanding; mineral spirits; two coats of Rustoleum clean metal primer; four coats of Rustoleum high performance flat white

Put it on today. We will see how it turns out.

Also trashed the old prop and scotch guarded a new piece of pull cable for install this week.

After I put her back together this week she should be ready for the new season.
