Anyone used an automotive one on their outboard if they found one that matched?

I wouldn't! I look at it this way, if my car breaks down, It is highly unlikely to get me killed! If my boat breaks down "especially offshore", I stand a decent chance of dieing out there I will use only parts made for that motor and the marine enviroment!!

Belts are belts...just do not buy cheap. You get what you pay for.

What Wevans said. Your auto is desighed to cruise down the highway at 2500 +/- rpm. That Opti is designed to cruise at 6000 rpm. There are other differences also.

I have no idea how many hours on your motor, but if the belt broke I would be giving the entire system a good look to determine, if possible, why the belt broke.

Moter is three years old and the pick in my report shows it still looks like new inside and out. No rust or wear on the pullies. It dry rotted I guess. I had not thought about thr RPM's I just figured rubber was rubber and wondered if anyone had used one. I dont have an hour meter but it has to be way under a hundred hours.

I sent a e mail to GATES(large belt manufacturer) a hour ago asking about marine/automotive belt composition.
This is their response:

On the aftermarket side they are not any different than standard automotive
belts however we have not been actively researching the marine market for some
time.

Actually you do, and more. An authorized Mercury service center can download the onboard computer and give you a complete run history of the motor, to include any codes for problems there might be.

I'm in the process of doing the annual service on my Opti right now. I need to change the fuel filter and I'm done.

Just out of curiosity, did you try turning the alternator and air pump by hand?

Mike's Marine "back when they would talk to me" said that I shouldn't ever have to replace the timing belt! I have over 1400 HRS on it now and never been changed I think I changed the filter once, a few years ago

They would turn easily by hand.
