Garrett's first gobbler

Post by DEMON »

Saturday morning me and my 11-year-old son Garrett (lil Demon) went to one of my honey holes over in Jefferson County. We've had birds around for a couple of weeks at this spot but couldn't get the right setup. This time we had it figured out. Just before daylight I started calling.By daylight, we had 3 different birds answering from 3 different directions. A little after daylight, the hens started to come down right on top of us and Big Daddy was right behind them. 4 hens made their way past Garrett's readied 12GA with Big Boy slowly following. The gobbler was only a couple of steps away from being in front of the gun when one of the hens turned and started right for us. It was now a race to see if the gobbler would take the few steps needed before the hen busted us. Luck was with us and Garrett was able to drop him at 10 yds. He weighed in at 19 lbs.

It was definitely up close and personal. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever had them in that close before. What's funny is I was sitting right behind him where I could see the hen and the gobbler. Garrett was head down on the gun watching the gobbbler and I don't think he even saw how close the hen came. He did great, a real pro!
