Fishfest

Post by fly n fish »

Headed out to the mouth of "O" bay Thursday evening. First time I have been out there. The wind was a little brisk but the birds, ladies and spanish were crushing baitfish everywhere. Caught ladyfish and macs over and over, it was as crazy. Started throwing different stuff to try to find a trout or redfish bite without the other fish crashing the party. I guess it was just luck that I drifted into a school of trout and found them with a zoom fluke on a jig head. Literally every cast (sure, you say) I got bit or missed a fish. All of the fish were about 20". Not monsters but some were smaller and some larger. I picked up a rod with a Top Dog and they were just as aggressive on it. EVERY cast either produced a fish or multiple strikes/misses. About 15 minutes into the topwater show I hooked a 21" trout on the front hook and a 2# Bluefish on the back. The Blue ripped the rear hook off at the side of the boat as I contemplated how to deal with that mess without getting a hook in my hand. I continued to throw the Mirrorlure with just a front hook and watched the fish hit it over and over until they got hooked. The worst part was I had to meet the wife at Angelos at 7:30 so I had to LEAVE that crazy fishy freak show. I am pretty new to inshore saltwater fishing but I believe that was the bite of a lifetime. No, there are no pictures and I was by myself so it did not happen, right? Wrong.
I went back today, the wind was much tougher. I marked the trout hole on the GPS and went back to the spot.... Nada. I guess I was just lucky enough to drift into a school of crazy feeding trout. It was like fishing in the St. Marks Riv last winter except these fish were big and extremely aggressive. Today I only caught a couple of jumbo sail cats on my Top Dog and a single Red that was about 27".
I have never posted a fishing report before but I was reading all the "where are the fish" reports tonight so I thought I would tell yall where they were a couple of days ago anyway.

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

Very nice. You will remember that trip for the rest of your life. Good job.
Ducks, turkeys, flats fishing. Who has time for golf?
