GPS Recommendations

I am looking to pick up a GPS and was hoping for a few leads. I see there is a wealth of info already here, but how fast tech changes.... I have admitedly spent little time researching thus far but was hoping for a few recommendations. I am looking for something handheld as I often canoe and hike as well as boat. Any handhelds also have depth finder capability, or should I just rig a depth finder independently to the boat? Circa $500 would be great. From what I have been reading on the forum, the device is only as good as its chart, so I will have to tackle that issue later. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.
