Bottom Fishing

Post by McRed »

Hey guys, I am buying my first bottom fishing rig and was wondering
what test line to spool it with. I figured to use 50 lbs. or so, but wanted
to know what you all suggested.

I use at least 60-80.....but I do put higher test on bigger reels. ex.- 9/0 reel higher test than 320/330 gti penn. Your leader is your biggest concern.....those grouper like to run for cover :o I'm sure we all do it a little different. It might help if you tell what kind of reel it is..good luck

You can use heavier leader say 6 feet of 80-100 and get away with lighter mainline. I normally use 40-60 pound mainline. 80 is overkill for our area IMHO.

Thanks guys, I'm getting a 4/0 Penn and like I said, I was figuring on putting 50 lb test on it (with an 80 lb mono leader). I was just trying to see how my own thoughts stacked up against those in the know around here.

I come on here alot to lurk and don't post as much as I should, since I don't fish as much as I want and have anything worth while to post. One of these days I hope to meet some of you guys, I joined the club last year but have not been able to fish a single tournament.

Again, thanks guys for a great place to talk fishin.
