We launched into a fairly low tide but being just there had a decent idea of how to run out and followed Johns example and headed to deeper water to find bait. I didn’t have the spot for bait that John used so we found our own and made quick work filling the well with pins and a nice pig fish or dozen didn’t find the other stuff we found on Johns deep bait hole but that was ok most the cobia were caught Sunday on pins or pigs so we headed offshore to one of the numbers John gave me we caught the bigger fish on. Strange what a day will do because there was no bait none of the other sea life we saw on Sunday just this mass of green gook in the water (technical term still pending) when we finally found some of the structure we certainly couldn’t see through the water column like Sunday it was yuck! Dropped baits anyway only to have them and the lead come back fouled up with green snot! WTH we thought, this sucks no bait no fish, no turtles, green goo everywhere what happened, so we headed over to the more public numbers Josh caught his fish on, and it still looked crappy a few drops later and we decided to pull the plug to run 13 some mile back toward the flats.
Only problem was it wasn’t quite the seas for a quick run we thought, we decided to try anyway at higher speed and tabbed down it actually felt better running @ 32 mph than 24 so we gunned it and made up for lost time hitting the shallows in no time while rocking out to the stereo. We found a deeper spot in the flats and drifted a pin on a cork and low and behold a big cobia swims up and takes the pin, Wohoo we thought until it ran through what I’d call a big sponge or grass bed and loaded the line up with grass and ping there she went! Couldn’t’ see anymore cobia around so we trout fished in 6-4 ft for a while, but were on the high tide lull and didn’t produce so we went back to the cobia area and ended up having a blast with @ 8-10 cobia swimming around the boat!! We ended the day hooking a totally of 8 fish and had a double header I was leadering (quick release with my jig @#$#^%@) a short then lost the BIG 20 + pounder Larry had on after it spit up a half digested trout, which knocked the pin and hook out of his mouth. Finally, Larry winds down on a good fish and we get it in the boat and she is 36 so iced it down looked at the clock and it was time to go. It was a fun exciting lemonade day out of some sour green lemons early in our offshore cobia spots with me and my buddy Larry. Thanks to John and Paul for all the help finding fish and re-learning Ecky after so many years away.
