tagged cobia
Has anyone caught a tagged cobia? Just caught one yesterday that was all the way from ocean springs, MS. They sure do migrate a distance.

Wrote an article for the latest issue of TIDE on the cobia tagging program and yes, they do travel long distances. The current record is for a fish tagged in 1994 off Pensacola that was recaptured in July 1995 off Hardeville, SC, a distance of 1,280 miles over 479 days at large.
The scientists at the University of Southern Mississippi suspect there may be several groups of fish and some mixing likely occurs. To really determine exact migration patterns, more fish will have to be tagged with the satellite tags (at approx. $1,200 a pop). Until then, the spaghetti dart tags are providing lots of good information.

First got to say MANY thanks, Silverking, for the shared read of the TIDE article! It was a GREAT read! Very well written article! 
Coolchange, Read Hendon with the Univ of Miss is a great guy and if you e-mail him he'll quickly set you up with tags. Has sent me batches several years in a row and best guess is I'm up to almost 40 tagged! I keep one or two a year for the grill, but honestly have gotten where I enjoy releasing them more than keeping them in the hopes of getting a report back on a future distant catch.
Never actually caught one with a tag though, so you already got me beat on that one!
