Keaton 6/5/11 with family

Post by Hit-n-Miss »

:-D Got to fish with my brother for the first time in probably 20 years today. No it's not like we don't get along or anything. just that he lives in North Carolina and never gets down here. Well he was down on business(He's a custom rod builder his company is Dogshark Custom Rods www.Dogshark.net) and we had an opportunity to go fish. So my brother, my son, and I left the house at 5:00 and headed to Keaton (more baitshops to hit on the way about selling rods) We get on the water and head out on what is to be my brothers first ever time flats fishing. Now he has been fishing all his life but mainly surf fishing and offshore. We hit the first spot and I am get the gear unstowed and then I realize........I forgot my softplastic worm box!!! :smt011 Well we have some misc. plastics and gulps on the boat and try to make the best of it, so we start off with topwater and gulps. A few casts later my brother gets his 1st trout, he says it is his biggest ever at 20.5"Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us I get one soon after and figure it's going to be a good day. Well by 10:30 we only have 3 trout and a couple of keeper rock bass so we head out deeper to see if we can get into some fish. And boy did we, it was ladyfish pandamonium. :-D Image

:-D The coolest thing is that we were all using one of my brothers custom rods. He said he was going to sell the one he was using but is not now.....it's got good mojo.

Sounds like a great time! Maybe now your brother won't stay away so long. :D  Very nice pictures, although I have to say the one of the spanish makes me a bit nervous...fingers awfully close to them teeth! :o
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

I did not notice the danger his fingers were in while taking the picture.

Question about the rods...I see pictures like this...and get confused. Am I not paying attention to my own rod, or are those eyelets on the side of the rod?

Also, this pic...

Are these off-kilter eyelets a feature? I admit to never seeing anything like this before...is this just for baitcasting rods? I guess it makes sense, under tension the rod bends down and the natural path of the line would be with the eyelets on the bottom of the rod like a spinner. I've just never seen it.

It's called a spiral wrap and it is very helpfull on offshore bait caster style rods. It takes away the torque while fighting a fish. Instead of the pressure on the eyes of a standard rod pulling the rod side to side while fighting a big fish, the spiral wrap rod keeps it straight and you can fight the fish not the rod.
