Need some help fishing, Please

Post by mean24 »

I just got a 16ft fiberglass tri-hull boat. I play football for FSU and dont really have the time to go out and explore for fishing areas. I was looking for some help and a little advice for where I can go fishing within an hour drive or so away from tallahassee. I went to st marks this last weekend and caught a little trout and catfish.. The majority of my fishing experience is bottom fishing for snapper, and grouper back home and a few times out of carabelle, but I know i cant really go out that far on my boat now. Besides all the workouts we have this summer and classes, my favorite thing is to fish so I would love to catch some fish over the weekend/s. If you could help me out on where to go and how to fish it since Im new to the ropes, I will try and compensate you however I can. You can also send me a Personal Message. thank yall so much

Also by chance any weekend you have room on your boat, I would love to go and would help pay expenses..

Depends on the level of action you want vs size of fish, type fish you are targeting. From my limited flats-fishing experience, I believe you can get more action on the flats (east or west) but the fish are generally smaller. I've talked to a lot of people that fish the flats with live shrimp or Gulp! under a popping cork. They tell me that they may catch 20 to 30 in a day but have to release 90% of them b/c they are undersized.
I fish St. Marks several times per year w/ my buddy. We primarily target slot reds & larger trout. We cast net pinfish to use for bait & fish the oyster bars. Sometimes we will also free-line live shrimp. We don't get as much action but we never have any undersized trout. Up until this year, we rarely had any undersized reds. So far this year (5 trips) we have probably caught 4 or 5 reds in the 20"+ range but we have caught a couple dozen of 17"- 18" puppies. Not getting a lot of love from the reds so far this year.
Anyway, give me an idea of what you are interested in catching. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I do have a little experiencing fishing @ St. Marks & I also listen to other fishermen who fish there.
Tight lines

Are you...Justin Bright?

Anyway, closest and fastest place would be St. Marks. You can put in either at the lighthouse or at Sheilds (as you probably know). And you'll quickly find spots to fish out there. Read these forums, check out myhometownfishing.com, etc, and you'll get more than a catfish and a trout :D

And, there's always freshwater fishing for a much faster trip. Yes, it doesn't have all the glory of saltwater fishing, but bass are always fun to catch, and big catfish can be found in some lakes. Any local could probably point you to a good lake!

Best of luck to you

They're a pretty good bunch of folks. Kyle is top notch & their meetings are pretty fun, even for an old guy.

Since you're in town, why not set aside the 1st Thursday of the month, come to Beef O' Brady's on Thomasville Road and sit in on one of the NFGFC meetings. Lots of informative guest speakers & folks willing to share what they know.

Just stay away from Jumptrout.

@ cowboy .. Yeah im for sure going to come to the NFGFC meetings, one of the other guys told me about it, kinda disappointed ill be out of town july 7th tho.

@Barhopr .. lol to funny. OOOOdell is pretty country.. He always talks about wanting to go hunting with me..

Went to st marks this weekend and launched out of light house.. fished the flats as soon as you get out ( caught small trout, and little sharks on pinfish) , then went and fished the oyster bar to the east and caught some more small trout fishing with spoons and live bait.. Then FWC came over because we were having to much fun.. lol ( one of the guys knew me from fan day) gave me some advice and told me that out of all the people they checked the best redfish they saw were north/west of the light house on the oyster bar right there in the east river, so we went there and had a little more luck (using pinfish under cork, spoons, red/white top water pup. )
Was I fishing the right places? and any advice on the baits. etc..

Odell has a place up here on the creek that is close to some great fishing. Not salt water I know but still a great place. Don't tell him I told you.
