Nutall Rise/Aucilla

Post by smeseroll »

How's the freshwater fishing in the Aucilla, mainly up near Nutall Rise? I know there are plenty of gar and bream, but is there any bass or specs to catch?

I married into a family with a cabin on the Aucilla, and I've only spent time fishing for trout and reds at the mouth. Any freshwater tips or suggestions are appreciated.

The cabin belonged to my wife's late grandfather. He was the only one who ever went down there and the couple neighbors that I know don't do a lot of fishing. I've been learning my way around on my own over the last year.

Allnighter can give you some specifics on the upper Aucilla if he will.

A lot of people will tell you not to even start fishing til you get past the bridge, but the biggest bass I ever hooked (and lost) in the Aucilla (10 or so years ago) was under a limb on the north bank about 400-500 feet down from the ramp on a 6 inch Rapala. It's been a long time since I went myself, but a buddy of mine caught a stringer full of bream there about a month or so ago, on crickets I think. Good Luck and watch out for rocks!

Thanks redyakker, Like I mentioned when I spoke with you earlier, I did get that kayak, which is the main reason for question. I figure now I will be fishing a little closer to the house, instead of always motoring down to the mouth. I am familiar with navigating the river and I have learned (the hard way) where most of the rocks are.
