Fish on a Plane

Post by smeseroll »

Work took me up to Ohio and Michigan this week. I got lucky and had a little time to sneak away for an afternoon of yellow perch fishing on Lake Erie with an old friend. Our boat limited out in no time with 120 fish. I wasn't about to miss out on my share of the meat, but I had never transported fish on a plane before, so I will tell you how it worked out for me.

All the fish was vacuum-sealed, hard frozen, and double bagged in a Sam's cold grocery bag. I wasn't able to track down any dry ice up there, and regular ice would put me in violation of the liquid restrictions, so nothing but the frozen fillets in the bag. The TSA agent was a little surprised when I told him I was carrying on 25 lbs of frozen fish, and after a little hesitation, he said it was okay. The fillets were in the cooler bags from about 2 pm to 1 am, and when I got home, they were still frozen rock-solid. Couldn't have worked out any better.

Just passing it on.
