Hot water Redfish

Post by fishinfool »

I decided to get on the water before old Sol made his appearance. I have not caught any fish worthy of comment for about a month now. This was getting me very discouraged. I was beginning to think all of the Reds had gone elsewhere. My trip started before daylight and I headed east. My first stop was a grass-line that I have not fished for about 2 years. I had a couple of topwater blowups with no love. I remember hearing somewhere(could have been on this board) if the fish are short striking, use a smaller offering. I went to a shorter plug. That was the right decision. A few casts later I picked up this 24" beauty.

I caught a 16" short a few minutes later. All in all I lost more fish than I have caught in a month. The heart breaker was when a huge Red took a swing and a miss at my plug. I threw a spoon right after it with no luck. Just seeing that 25"-30" bruiser gave me hope that the fishery has not changed as much as I had feared.
All the fish were released to fight another day. I was off the water by noon, the boat washed and put away by 1:30.
A very good day.

When I was growing up and fishing the coast, we never targeted reds until it got cold and they ran up the rivers and creeks.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Yep and what I hate is how many more reds I could have caught had I targeted them all year round. :smt009
