st. George Island

Post by caper15 »

Never taken my boat around St. George island before and I am this weekend. Does anyone know about the area on the bay side of the island? Is it clear of rocks and other danger? Or is it an area I need to worry about and not take my boat out since have not been out in that area before? And what about the waves and wind there is it normally alittle rough there? The charts seem to show rough water this weekend.

Would appreciate any advice.

The east pass can be very tricky depending on winds and tides. That bay can go from flat to hellish pretty quick. Not sure how big your boat is but doesn't look ideal.

Friday
SOUTHEAST WIND 15 TO 20 KNOTS. SEAS 3 TO 5 FEET.
PROTECTED WATERS CHOPPY. A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT
SOUTHEAST WIND 10 TO 15 KNOTS.
SEAS 2 TO 4 FEET. PROTECTED WATERS A LIGHT TO MODERATE CHOP. A
CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

SUNDAY
SOUTHEAST WIND AROUND 10 KNOTS. SEAS 2 TO 4 FEET.
PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH TO A LIGHT CHOP. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS.

East Pass and Government Cut can both be tricky even with kind tides and winds. The longshores will put rollers on the gulf side that you won't see until you're in the middle of them. If you stay behind the island, you should be fine, especially if you get out and come in early. As goes with any trip, watch the forecasts and then don't trust them one bit once you get out there and see it for yourself.

I agree with gumbo. With that weather report, the Goverment cut will get pretty nasty. Great place to fish for bull reds but not sure it will worth it with big swells coming through.
