Holy Black Flies....Batman

Went out this weekend after work and Black flies were everywhere not sure what just happened maybe full moon but they were thick. swarms of them talked to some people who were swimming at the birds roost same problem. they bit me thru my socks. They were eating my buddies repel like skittles. Any suggestions on something to run these things off? Didnt try thermacell.
