Red fishin 9/10/11

Post by fishinfool »

I got to the lighthouse ramp at 7:30, just in time for low tide. I headed out towards Grey Mare Rock. Actually I passed it by a good bit. I saw some bait busting so I tossed a jig for a little while. I caught a trout, he looked small and I released him(didn't bother to measure). I caught a couple ladyfish and a catfish by 10:00. That convinced me it was time to get skinny. I headed in toward Palmetto Island. Since the tide was coming in I decided to run to the back of my favorite creek and work my way out, casting up current and working my lure with the tide. I tossed a spoon for a while and was getting no action except a very large ladyfish. It was difficult to keep the pencil grass of the spoon. I changed to an Exude DART in the trout color with a weighted hook. That was the ticket. I picked up a 24" Red, released him and shortly thereafter I tricked a 30" beast into eating. The beast didn't know he was hooked for a moment, then realized something was not quite right and changed direction. He then started to move away from me which drove the hook home. It was on then. He started towing my boat while stripping drag at an amazing rate. His speed was such that a rooster tail was coming off my line. Finally after getting him to the boat he decided to try one more lunge. That one nearly broke my wrist. Shortly thereafter he was landed and released.
I picked up a 21" Red a few minutes later while taking a break to let 3 Bottlenose Dolphin pass. It was then that I tried one of my honey holes. It almost didn't pan out. I worked it hard and finally scored with a 22" Red and a 16" Trout.
All fish were released to fight again.
All in all a pretty good day and I am looking forward to doing it again soon.

Sounds like a great day! 30" red in the skinny water with a rippin tide - that is what we hit the water for! Outstanding.

Good day, FF. We fished the same area later and found a couple. Saw the biggest blacktip I've seen in awhile cruising around in there, too.

Trout bite has been off since the storm. I'm thinking too much freshwater outflow. There are gar all over the flats, as far out as Grey Mare.

While in St. Marks, do me a favor and stop by Bo Lynns Gro. and say hello to my mother Miss Joy. She needs the business. Beer and Pepsi is ice cold, plus no Ethanol in her pumps. My Name is Billy Kenneth Hillhouse, but they all call me Kenny.

Thanks,
CS Marine (Kenny)

Kenny,

I just stopped there yesterday and baught some supplies. It was my first time there. Nice little place. I didn't realize she doesn't sell Ethanol fuel. I don't recall her having signs about the fuel. Regardless, she needs some BIG ones. Some down there needs to sell some yummy sandwiches.

I ALWAYS stop in for a cold drink and a friendly word. Your momma is one of the sweetest women on the planet. She reminds me so much of my Mom and Grandma. She has Vienner Sausages and crackers too!
