I'm trying to plan a bonefish trip on the cheap to Roatan, honduras, part of group of bay islands off the coast of honduras and thought it would be really cool to get a group of us from the forum here maybe 4-6 of us go on a bonefish holiday adventure. might even create a few new friendships. november/december would be great time to go. weather will be perfect and lets face it the fishing will be slowed down and cold here in florida but in the tropics? not so much.
Why Roatan?
-Its compoletly off the grid and unheard of by most anglers. it sees less anglers and is skipped over by the majority of tourists/anglers or they are just unaware of it. I'ved read that many locals go several months without seeing a angler-guest the islalnd.
-The Fishing is amazing! bonefish, tarpon, barracuda, permit, grouper, snapper, triggerfish, several kinds of jacks. bonefish are said the be the the biggest outside of florida and bahamas. 1-6lb average with 10lb+ singles and doubles a common every day sight. Permit permit permit!! permit are everywhere. I've read that there are more permit on any given flat here than any where else. permit average 5-12lb with good numbers of 20lb. I talked to a guy that runs a lodge on the island and he said that he see's permit tailing every day- morning and evening with no one to cast to them! plenty of tarpon, smallish tarpon and lots of small snook in the mangroves creeks.
-"Do It Yourself". this is the place for diy. no guides needed. just hike along the beach until you find a good flat or take kayaks out to the outside flats.
-Flats diversity. outside flats, inside flats, cays, bays, mangroves, shoreline flats. it has it all. tons of thick turtle grass and a good mix of sand, coral and turtle grass. lots and lots of coral so it's technical bonefishing. and all flats are wadable.
-Price. Roatan has a international airport and has direct two hour flights from florida. but the flight is the bulk of the cost. there are many inn's or various sorts as low as $25 a night. most sit right on the flats and many offer free use of kayaks or to guests
What do you guys think? anyone interested? lets discuss
