St. Marks 10-6 and 10-8...Fall Reds are upon us!!

After a long week of studying for tests at fsu...after class thursday I figured I would reward myslef with an afternoon wade trip. I grabbed 3 dozen shrimp and cast netted 3 dozen mud minnows and was too my spot by noon. The first hour of the outgoing tide was quite slow with only a couple of ladyfish and spanish makeral to show for. Then about 2 hours before the low tide the light switch went off. I caught 3 trout back to back to back that went 21",22", and 23" :o! Since iv become more coonservation minded as iv gotten older, I released all three big girls to let them make us some more . Karma is a good thing becasue 5 minutes later a school of reds showed up and it was on like donkey kong. I got a monter hit...he ran 40 yards and then spit the hook...ok wtf..next cast another monster hit a long run and then my 20lb fluro gives way...WTF! Next cast and good hit, long fight and I landed a 28.5" RED :smt007 . First overslot iv caught this year while wading. Next cast I land a 23" red. Next cast I landed a 24" red. Finally that rally was over as the school had moved along. About 10 minutes later I land a 15" flounder. Over the next hour I added a few more spanish to the list and a dozen ladyfish. By this time it was 330 and I had to get back to meet Don England (Greenbone) to head to the NFGFC meeting at beef o bradies to talk to people about the "take a kid fishing event". BTW I hope all of you are partaking in this event. I would definatly say this was in my top 3 wading days ever.
Final Tally:
3 Keeper Trout (released) 21",22", and 23"
3 Reds 23", 24", 28.5" (released the 23" and 28.5")
5 Keeper Spanish Makeral (released, too fishy for me :-D )
1 Keeper Flounder (released)
15 Ladyfish :lick:

My dad called me earlier this week and told me he wanted to fish saturday since he was going to be gone for a month and wouldnt be fishing till the begining of nevemeber. Last night I called him and told him it was going to be rough as a cobb with the SCA being called for out there today but he insisted on going out. We left the dock this morning at 9 am armed with 50 live shrimp and our foul weather gear. We fished a few creeks with no avail so we decided to hit a "go to" oyster bar and low and behold my third cast I hooked a solid fish and after a few minute fight my dad netted the solid 22" Redfish. By this time it was freaking howling 30-35mph out of the NE and was making white caps in the river as far as we could see :o ! Once we caught this guy the rest of the reds got the memo and left. After that we decided to brave it and headed to the flats. We had a casting contest because all u had to do was flip the cork in the air and watch the wind pull all the line off the reel. At some points we were making 100 yard casts lol! The first 30 minutes we were out there the trout were banging it as we caught 8 shorts and a nice 17" keeper trout. About 15 minutes later we both looked at the each other looked off in the distance and saw the fromt approaching from the east as the wind picked up another 10mph to 40+ :o and we said ahh..i think weve had enough! At that point we beat ourselves up on the flats on the way back to the fish camp in our 22ft offshore boat lol. We caugth a keeper trout and a keeper red in those conditions so I think we did ok :-D ! Definitley the worst conditions I have ever fished in. Not the smartest thing we have sone but hey...we caught fish and made it back ok!

Nice report. It was good meeting you Thursday and talking with you and Don. I hope the weather is good for the take the kids fishing on Saturday. I am looking forward to baiting some hooks with you. Can't wait to see the kids eyes light up when they get a pull on their line.

Jhults11, where were you wading at? The fallen palm tree in your picture suggests you were wading by or near the old pier/dock by the lighthouse. I've wade fished that area quite a few times without your success. You had a great day out there man. Nice post.
