Econfina afternoon 10/25/2011

Post by Sir reel »

Decided to head to the water yesterday (me and Dixie). Econfina on the water at noon, then West to the “mail box” area . Main GPS wasn't working  but my handheld back up luckly had the route that kept me away from the worst of the rocks. Turned out to be a dirty fuse that was later corrected during a drift. Super clear water, high tide around 2pm. Water temp fluctuated between 66 and 67. Took all afternoon but managed a limit of trout. Landed a nice tournament fish early on at 19 15/16". I swear if he’d had one more tooth in his head he would have made 20”. The next four took a while. The small sea bass were thick. You couldn’t count to 3 before they were attacking. Caught a couple dozen small trout…I’d be ashamed to even call em “shorts”.
Most all fish caught on “new penny” and “pearl” gulps. Caught one on a Earl Futch special. :D Tried top water some but nothing other than one good blow up. Several followed all lures to the boat. One side note…if your planning on fishing this area (Econfina), make sure your have something for Flies and lots of it. Worst I’ve ever seen. Swarmed the boat all day long no matter how far out. Wore my dog out. She was snap’n at em all afternoon and I was swat’n ankles. :smt011

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I've managed to train Dixie to do a lot of things but She hasn't quite mastered handling the camera yet.

Those flies will go back on shore if the breeze blows toward land. I've only seen them like that when you have a wind out of the N / NE.

DR... I was actually surprised when I read your post. At Econfina, it was nearly flat clam at noon. The wind picked up a litte and was from the North East. Later on, around high tide, it shifted towards the East and blew a bit stronger but was still very nice...actually helped a bit wth the fly situation. Then about 4:30 or so it went flat again.

I have had 2 great fishing days at Ecofina this week, satdy and mundy. I found the falling tide to be the ticket.

A good report Sir Reel, thanks!

Dixie Reb, we must have fished the same area Tuesday? We went as far as Rock Island hunting fish. Found some around high tide just north of Spring Warrior. Bad looking water, muddy and dark, but the fish were on. My wife and I each caught four trout, one BSB and she got a 19.5 inch redfish. Lots of shorts and trash while it lasted. Got several good keepers to the boat before coming off. Biggest trout, 19 & 7/8, caught on a suspension, twitch mirrolure chart plug.

Sending both you and SR a private PM. (If I figure out how!)

Thank you for your report.
