Need spots at st. marks

Post by setty7 »

Im new to the forum and to salt water fishing. We usually go out of Shields at St. Marks. We are in the process of getting a GPS to plot points but as of right now we dont have one. Can yall suggest where to go? We are going out saturday (1/21) around 11. We are looking for reds and trouts or just whatever bites. Its a 17 ft key west (flatts boat) so we can go but a few miles out. Thanks for yalls help!

Welcome to the forum Setty7! If you are putting in a Shields then no worries about distance. Once you put in, head up river and look for boats. The first bend at the "Resume Normal Speed" sign is a good spot to start at. Live or dead shrimp fished on the bottom is a good starting point. You WILL catch fish, but the reds and trout seem to move through in schools.

If you want to get more serious about your catching and quality of catch. Then you might want to try some lures that sink slowly. OR, try fishing the Wakulla River for Reds. Both rivers are holding plenty of fish.

Good luck and let us know how ya did!

Yes, but don't be married to that lure or that color. :) See what they want and give it to em.

Over the summer, I fished a spot (one of JT's holes) and absolutely tore up the fish during the dog days on Nuclear Chicken 5" shad gulp. Nephew beside me in the boat threw his tackle box at them and all they wanted was the Nuc Chicken shad. He finally gave up and borrowed some. Caught Specks, Silvers, Lady and blues until we got too hot and came home.
Ducks, turkeys, flats fishing. Who has time for golf?
