Buying a new flats boat, need suggestions

Post by Hotpins300 »

Right now I have a 14'6" (i think) aluminum jon boat with a 28 hp johnson. Ive had the boat for over a year and it runs pretty well, but I want to upgrade. I was looking at a used J14 or J16 skiff with a center console and a 25 hp. I really just want a boat to fish the flats and be able to get out to dog island or fish around the alligator point area. I'm trying to spend under $4k. What do you all think? I was also looking a Boston Whaler, but they just seem a little pricey for what you get. I have only been looking on craigslist, are there any better sites? Thanks guys

Neither of the boats you mention upgrading to seem that much bigger than what you have to me. If you are going to fish Alligator Pt to Carrabelle, you can stick to a fiberglass boat, but if you want to fish to the East from Shell Pt. to Econfina, I would go with another aluminum 16 - 18 feet and as wide as you can find.
Craig's List is good if you don't want to deal with Ebay. Thehulltruth.com is a good place to check on boats you don't know a lot about.

I remember where there may be a boat you could upgrade to, if it is still for sale. Call me tomorrow at (850) 509-3116 in Tally.
