It's probably a red wolf. Probably escaped from the colony on St Vincent. That's not the first time. Show your photo to the folks over at the office in Appalach.

Coyotes do come in variations of black but that looks a lot more like the pictures of the red wolves I've seen.

"Other red wolves have been released on coastal islands in Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina as a steppingstone between captivity and the wild. Although these islands are not large enough to provide for the needs of more than a few red wolves at a time, they provide the opportunity for them to breed and exist in the wild in order to produce animals for future mainland reintroductions."

Nice Pics. I would have said coyote until reading this.

pretty agressive eagles; that isn't the easiest prey. I'm wondering if he tried to take some food from them.

Doesn't look like a yote to me. Appears too thick through the head and muzzle.

In the off chance, did you see it run? Like maybe when the eagles were charging it?

If it ran with its tail UP it was a red wolf.
If it wan with its tail down, almost between its legs, it was a coyote.

That's what the curator at the jax zoo told me....and was confirmed at the tallahasse jr. Museum at the red wolf display.

It's not a red wolf! There's only two red wolfes on St. Vincent's and both of them have radio collars. That's a coyote with mange.

Not a typical distribution for mange.

I'm just giving it a wild guess here but something about the legs and head looks like a red wolf. There's a decent picture at this link.
