Hi, first time user:

Taking my grandson to Ecofina tomorrow, 17th, and would appreciate
advice on what type fish to go for and tactics, equipment, to use. How do you best catch the baitfish (rigging, etc.), best area to catch trout and/or black seabass. Is there a secret to catching that so-far elusive
redfish?

Thats a mouthful FNG for a first post....I will cover the redfish....You can throw jigs, stick baits and various other baits at them..you have to figure them out sometimes..A red/white grub is a good stand....Fish for them in close around creeks, points and bars...You can catch them further in the creeks, but it's harder. Some creeks hold reds and some don't, it's a matter of exploring and warding of the yellow flies.....You can also take a jig head and shrimp and throw to a point, creek mouth and or bar, anchor and wait for one to cruise by.....

Wish I could help fishngolf. I don't fish over that way much. But welcome aboard anyway.

For trout & rock bass - I would head over towards Hickory Mound and Rock Island area. Generally some good spotty bottom over that way. I would try in about 6 foot and work out if I wanted rock bass and trout. A standard trout jig bounced on the bottom should seal the deal if they are there.

Later in the summer I have caught them in shallower water, rock bass that is. I would check the area between #1 and #2 bird racks.

If you fish in close try a cajun thunder with a grub under it....

Watch for the storms thay generally come from the west, keep an eye out.....

How old is your Grandson?

If he is real young he might have a blast catching Pinfish with some tiny hooks and squid, or fishbites. They should be most anywhere you find grass. Once you have secured said Pinfish you can "pin" them on a hook and see if anything is interested.

Some shrimps ought to catch something too.

It takes a little more skill and patience to work artificial baits.

I'd say going to a new place and not having any boat vs unseen objects problems, catching some keepers AND spending quality time with your grandson is money well spent!! What better way to spend a day
