Don't Forget About The Drag

Post by fishinfool »

If you are like me, I try to remember to completely loosen the drag on all my reels when I am finished with them, but it does not always happen. If a reel sits up for any length of time with the drag set, one or more of the washers can stick together. This can cause big problems when that beast of a fish wants more line than you have already given him. A sticky or chattering drag can loose you that fish faster than you can react to the situation.
Drags are serviceable. They can be cleaned and reconditioned as well as lubed in most cases. Some drags are meant to be bone dry, but most do well with a light grease.
Drag washer upgrades are also available. There are carbon fiber drag washers that I swear by. These carbon washers have never failed, chattered or frozen in any of my reels. They do not overheat and the drag pressure is constant from the beginning to the end of the battle. Most drag upgrades average $10. That is a small investment that can greatly reduce the chance of a lost fish due to drag problems.
Before your season begins, please check all of your drags. If you are having any problems with sticking or chattering I can help. Give me a call to schedule a drag service or upgrade today.

Jim,
I'll give you a call this week about that project we discussed earlier. I finally have my backup reel, so I can do without my others while you work your magic.
