UPDATE: Pinfish on the Flats, Photo Intense! :-)

Post by big bend gyrene »

Anybody catching pins on the flats now? Brother will be in town this weekend and we're thinking about taking our 3 year old little girls out this weekend. Will be floating a few cajun thunders so we can show them a trout or two if they cooperate but honestly know that they would just as much enjoy catching pinfish. Just wondering if they're biting shallow yet. Anybody can confirm, will be greatly appreciated.

Saw quite a few pinners on the East Flats last Friday and the water has warmed a bunch since then. Alligator Harbor water buoy was reading 71 degrees at 6 a.m. this morning. Caught my fish on a Hall 'em In Mini-Hitchcock plug, but you should be able to put the girls on some BBG. There were also box fish and finger mullet, so it's going off right now.

Did you get your PM?

I can't speak for St Marks, but they're everywhere in Keaton. 2-5', getting nibbles everywhere.

east of st marks in the shallows we have been getting pinfish grabbing grubs quite a bit. Very active for the water temps even a few weeks ago.

Many thanks for the replies! Exactly what I was hoping to hear! Definitely will have to throw out a couple of small hooks tipped with pieces of gulp (CRACK of the pinfish universe). :-D

They are here in Carrabelle. I can't want for the pilchards to show up in numbers.

Since asked the question a week or so ago and have been since, will use the thread to give an updated report. Pinfish are thick as ever on the flats! Caught them constantly, with a mix of small black sea bass and grunts thrown in for good measure. No need for big write up on this report, pics tell the tale! :-D

One story worth sharing is that despite dragging shrimp and gulps under cajun thunders while we drifted and caught pins, we didn't snag any trout. Didn't help we fished the bulk of our time at dead slack. This shared, DID get some excitement when minutes before making the decision to head for the hills one of our light rods bent over double and sang a wondeful drag-screaming tune! Fast as it ran, my suspicion was a big mackerel but turns out it was a nice sized bonnethead shark, giving all the kids aboard a thrill and the chance to feel its sand paper like skin as we unhooked it! Lightest load of fish I've caught in years but a trip I'll remember with fondness forever.
