Sad story. The lesson is: go offshore, bring EPIRB or PLB. They could afford a 30' boat and the $ it takes to fish offshore but not a $500 safety device and so one of them is dead.

I talked to an FWC officer last week a day after found two guys near the K tower. They were stuck on their boat for more than a day after running out of gas. He found they thought they had about a half of tank when they departed. It wasn't a large boat nor was the tank large. It clearly seemed questionable that the boat could make it there and back on a half of tank. The guys didn't have a radio and they ran out of flares. This kind of stupidity is unbeleivable yet it happens often. It's sad when people lose their life over safety issues that are easily avoidable.

yeah its a shame how just little inexpensive things can saves ones life. i recently went offshore fishing earlier this year with a guy i know , "the panacea report i posted a while back" him and his buddy went out in a 30'+ boat that was an over night trip. while anchored off for the night, a storm came up on them and flooded the boat. he held onto a cooler for 4 days and having to eat the squid they brought for bait to survive. just glad he didn't bring that luck with him on that trip but its scary what can happen out there. like what slowroller said, "makes ya think"

Yep. Got both. The EPIRB is mounted on the side of my console every trip and if by myself, the PLB is on my belt.
