Pinfish trap question????

Post by Hit-n-Miss »

I bought a pinfish trap and tried it this sat. All I had for bait was cut up pinfish so I tried it with that. Left it for 30 minutes and came back to check it. It had 2 pigfish in it and a dozen small BSB's in it. What is the best bait and how long do you leave it? Thanks

Most any kind of chum will work. Ground ladyfish, pinfish, shrimp, 9 lives seafood platter or a combination of any of those. Try putting the bait in an old sock so as to attract the pins and make it last longer.
Soaking the baited trap overnight or 4-5 hours will produce much better than 30 minutes. After some trial you will find where there are bigger concentrations of pins over other species.
Have fun.

Lady fish are great bait in the box... and overnight is best.
I find I can catch just as many on a bream hook and a little gulp... I rig a mini fish finder rig- two droppers and a weight at the bottom.
Ask big bend gyrene I can fill up the box ;-)

Get yourself a can of dog food and open it up. Place the open can inside panty hose. Place this in the trap. Has always worked well for me.

I got a pin trap, but I can only get fishing when work and the noaa are on the same page, so I don't really have a window to leave it out.
It might take me a week or two to get back to it.
I use bman's method, and with all aboard going hard at it, we can stuff the well in 30 minutes.
Also, I try to keep any not used live until I get to the ramp and offer them to anyone headed out.
In the past, others have loaded us up at the ramp and got us to the hole sooner. Always appreciated that.

Drift the flats with an ultra light baited with squid. Have a trap ready to go baited with broken up LY's. When you have caught a couple dozen and you hit a hot spot - put your pinfish catch in the trap and drop it. Let it sit overnight. Next morning it will be full. Keep in mind..........I am the King.

Shields Marina in St. Marks now carries the White Marsh chum in a couple different sizes. It's made from menhaden pellets and is stored in a biodegradable burlap bag, so no need for sock or nylon. It works well, lasts awhile and will also attract the big boys like sharks and cobia if you're targeting them.

I use ly's and cat food in pantyhose. Works great, but get weird looks at the Walmart checkout
