trailer tag price

Post by redzone »

hey guys. i just bought a new car a couple of months ago and the price for the tag was around $500. now im looking at a small jon boat with trailer for cheap and was wondering what the price for the tag will be. just a ballpark number if you dont want to post the exact amount. i cant go to the tax collector till this weekend to find out how much. i mean if the tag is more than the boat its pretty ridiculous to waste my time. but TIA for any help

It depends on the weight of the trailer only. The weight of the boat is not calculated in the tax. For a small jon boat trailer of around 250lbs it should be about $24

Florida no longer titles trailers. The registration for the trailer is based on the weight of the trailer. The registration for the boat is based on length. You also have to pay sales tax on the boat. For a jon boat and comparable trailer you're probably looking at around $100 to get it titled and registered the first time. You're probably looking at around $50 a year for the trailer and boat.

Based on my own recent experience, make sure you have some kind of Bill of Sale. Good luck completing this in 1 trip. They have lots of rules, but are a little short on common sense. If I recall correctly, they charge sales tax on the hull and trailer.

REGISTER YOUR TRAILER IN ALABAMA, THEY DO NOT HAVE TAGS FOR BOAT TRAILERS. GA. HAS GONE UP ON THEIR BOAT REGISTRATION, PRIOR TO THIS YEAR MY REGISTRATION ON MY 18 FT. ALUM. BOAT WAS $12.00 FOR 3 YRS., NOW IT IS $47, I GUESS THE POWERS THAT BE ARE TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH FLA. AND SEE JUST HOW MUCH THEY CAN CHARGE AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

Sad to say a couple of years ago, the state of Florida lost it's ever loving mind when it comes to tags for autos and boat and trailer registration. I was paying $45.00 a year for an old 1992 Ford truck. The next year the same truck went up to $128.00. I'm a Florida resident. My wife is a Georgia resident because we have a house in both states and spend about as much time at one as we do the other. My 15 foot boat is $46.00 a year in Florida. It's $20.00 for three years in Georgia. The old 1992 Ford went from $128.00 in Florida to $24.00 when I put it in my wife's name in Georgia. Now all my boats and autos are in her name registered in Georgia. It's well worth the exra money we have to spend for her out-of-state fishing licence for Florida.
