Me and my girl - Econfina Friday

Post by Dubble Trubble »

Launched late at Econfina around 10:30. First time boat has been in water since March of last year. We were heading out about 20 miles to get some groupa, but the boat decided to start sputtering at around 10 miles out. So I did a U-turn and we came back in to near the river mouth and set up a drift at one of my holes. ( Forgot about that little filter under the cowl) :(

Caught fish all day long, with 9 nice keeper trout and a slew of rockbass in the cooler. Had a shark followed us for a while snapping up rock bass that would bite on my Cajun thunder gulp out the back of the boat. Finally hooked him too, but let him go.

Highlight of the day was when my girlfriend had to pee, and did a very beautiful backflip out of the boat..

Think COLD water ( o ) ( o ) :o

I gave her a 9.5 score on the backflip. 10 on the wet shirt...... :-D

It was a beautiful day on the water with a beautiful gal....

Oh, yes, she outfished me too.... :-?

I'll have to start watching for your boat out there! We launched a little later than you, fished the same general area, but no love from trout or keeper size basses.
What depth were you in?

To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

We were in about 8 feet all day. Bite slowed when we would drift in to 6 or less. We did go in to the bars near Hickory Mound and picked up 1 more keeper late in the day.

Dubble,I'm gonna go ahead and ask a stupid question.....myself and many others fished close(2-3 ft),a lil deeper(4-5) and some even a lil further....but how in the world did u know to go so far out??? I asked the fiancé of mine sev times"Wth are those boats doing so dang far out there?". Never thought to go SO deep this early in the season. I noticed you did have a little company out there but most were congregated a lot closer in? Just curious bout how you knew where they would be? Great Job btw..... Jigging off bottom?bait? We did fair in close but looks like next trip I'm gonna give the deeper what a shot! Anyone else think to go so deep, feel free to elaborate as to why.

I have also noticed a lot of boats out deep, six to eight foot range when I have been over the last few weeks. We have caught nice trout and reds up close on the same day they had the kayak tourny and the same day they cancelled the RTSO tourny. My wife and I went to Ecky and fishd close in around Rock Island and Hickory and struck out? Go figure. After seeing these nice fish I will give it a try next time out.

Like I said, I had went out to get grouper when the motor started acting finicky ( I will post about that in boating, solved the problem)

When we got back in, I just went to a spot near the new bird rack straight out of the river I had marked as a rock bass hole.

I was surprised to catch trout at 8 feet, but we got them. I will think a little different now too. If it had not been for the motor problem, I would have been up in close to the bars in 3 to 4 feet trying to get the trout too!

PS. I was using an old Zoom white fluke dragging the bottom, and Cindy was using a candy corn dragging the bottom.

I told her the same thing. She was NOT amused..... :o

1/4 oz for that depth....1/8 oz for less that 5 ft.
