Cape San Blas/ Port St.Joe this weekend

Post by Lighterknot »

Headed to port st.Joe this weekend with several families and kids, was wondering if some of you "experts" here on this forum could offer some advise on the fishing there this time of year. Gonna be surf fishing from shore as too many folks, and not enough room on boat to get everyone on board. leaving boat at home.. (gonna regret this) but just not enough time to get all of the crew on board. what type of bait, bay side or gulf side.? cast net? or just leave fishing poles at home.

Thanks in advance..
Happy Mothers day..

you're going to regret not taking a boat. The Bay is full of trout. Any boat, even paddle-craft, that you could launch from the park or the hand launch on the Cape will provide access to lots of trout. I cruised the outside of the Cape last Sunday and only saw cats and ladies. I did not talk to any surf fisherman who had managed much success.
In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. And we will understand only what we are taught.

Pompano are being caught off the cape. Just dig up some sand fleas and use a 2 hook pompano rig with a 1-2 oz. pyramid weight. Big flounder were being caught at the stump hole last week, but not sure if they are still around.

Thanks Showboat and BayGator for the info, pompano and or flounder would be a tasty treat for sure, I have been searching for the stump hole mentioned and cant find it anywhere. the reports from the guide on cape @ lighttacklefishing.com, has reported some nice catches of trout and flounder this week.

Just may have to take one of the boats after all..

The stump hole is just south of lighthouse bayou. There are rocks piled up on both sides of the road, you cant miss it. A lot of people just wade fish there if the conditions are right. Good luck.

went to Cap San blas for a week the beginning of April and was in the same situation, wanted to fish but no Boat. Surf fishing on the gulf is always a good bet, relaxing on the beach with a pole stuck in the sand is a great way to spend the day. Use a pompano rig with a pyramid weight, use fish bites and LIVE shrimp. Fish bites are great, if you've never seen them, they look like a stick of gum and will stay on for at least 30 mins or so, (had better luck with the white ones) Caught a couple of pompano and a few nice size whiting. another option is the pier at St.Joe. It's a big covered peir beside the boat ramp.. We fished at the pier during High tide. Had a blast, was great because it's a covered pier so you don't have to be in the sun all afternoon, plus your right beside that channel for deeper water. We used a popping cork with about a 2.5- 3 ft lead to a new penny gulp. Caught flounder and trout and something else that broke the line.. Wanted to try the rock wall, heard it was good but ran out of time. Have Fun! tight Lines!
